- The completion of a second major OR an area of concentration is required for all gender and women’s studies majors. The Gender and Women’s Studies major works well as a double major, and this is one option in the program. Students choosing not to undertake a second major complete an area of concentration. An area of concentration is a combination of three courses (9-12 credits) at the upper level in a single department or with a common theme outside of Gender and Women’s Studies.
* Gender and Women’s Studies majors may apply and interview for GWS 660, the internship course, which combines placement in a community setting with coursework integrating the experience and academic background. All majors are required to enroll in the Advanced Seminar, GWS 640, which provides a framework for previous coursework.
* Directed study credits (WS 299, 698 or 699) cannot be used toward electives in the major. WS 660, Internship, is a six-credit course. Three (3) credits may be applied toward required electives in the major.
* No course may be applied toward more than one requirement in the major. No more than nine (9) credits may be applied toward both the major and the certificate in LGBT Studies.
