
African American Studies professor Ethelene Whitmire‘s new book The Remarkable Life of Redd Peggram: The Man Who Stared Down World War II in the Name of Love was featured in Inside UW News. Dr. Whitmire is an affiliate with the Gender & Women’s Studies and German, Nordic, and Slavic departments.
Her new book tells the overlooked tale of a queer Black man who risked his life during WWII for love. In this article, she discussed the book born from Reed Peggram’s love letters and shares about Peggram’s life as a queer Black man who moved to Europe and survived Nazi internment during WWII. It is a fascinating glimpse into WWII from a different vantage point.

Dr. Whitmire’s book has garnered national attention, including a starred review in Publishers Weekly, selection as a Book of the Day by NPR, and coverage by People and Essence magazines. Her research has won awards and funding from the Ford Foundation, the Fulbright Program, the Lois Roth Foundation, the American Scandinavian Foundation, and the American Library Association.
