GWS Student Spotlight – Camren Livermore

Camren Livermore is double-majoring in Gender & Women’s Studies and Biochemistry and getting a certificate in LGBTQ+ Studies and Biology Core Curriculum.

Why did you choose GWS?
I chose a certificate in LGBTQ+ studies because I enjoyed my time in intro-level LGBTQ+ studies courses so much that I wanted to commit myself to continuing. I lived in Open House my first year, took the seminar, and moved forward with Intro to LGBTQ+ Studies after that. My professors have been a huge source of encouragement in my continuing education in GWS.
Has GWS changed your approach to your involvement (on or off campus) during college? If so, how?
LGBTQ+ studies has empowered me to engage in advocacy work for marginalized students. With the help of peers, I got involved with the Associated Students of Madison working on equity issues on campus. My current work is focused on expanding gender-inclusive restroom access, informed by concepts like intersectionality and disability justice that I’ve explored in GWS.
How has GWS shaped your future plans?
My involvement in LGBTQ+ studies has impacted the ways I perceive my career plans. I am a pre-med student, and my time in GWS has made me acutely aware of equity issues within healthcare systems. Moving forward, I have every intention of advocating for the folks that are most disenfranchised by existing structures of power, both in my continuing education and as a physician.
