GWS Student Spotlight – Haleigh Smith

Haleigh Smith is majoring in Gender & Women’s Studies, English, and History.

  1. Why did you choose GWS?

I chose to add GWS as a major because I knew I was interested in fem/women’s history and literature. Once I began taking GWS courses, as well as working for the department, I was exposed to so many new and incredible studies that fascinated me.
  2. Has GWS changed your approach to your involvement (on or off campus) during college? If so, how?

GWS has totally shifted my academic and professional interests after being in college. By my sophomore year, I knew I was interested in history and literature, which are also my majors. But I knew something was missing. GWS truly encapsulates all my interests and has created a unique lens for me to apply not just to my studies but also to my life.
  3. How has GWS shaped your future plans?

When I entered my freshman year, I was pretty set on being pre-law. After interacting with faculty and becoming intrenched in interdisplinary studies and pedagogy, I really felt drawn to being in academia, because this department is such a gift. GWS is filled with scholars and studies I really resonate with. I felt excitement about my future, knowing this work makes meaningful impact—just as it has on my life.
