1.Why did you choose GWS?
I chose Gender and Women’s Studies because it aligned perfectly with my evolving interests. Initially pursuing a track in pre-nursing, I stumbled upon the captivating realm of gender and health during my first semester in Sociology of Sexuality (GWS 160). The dynamic exploration of sex education within the GWS curriculum sparked a profound interest in me, prompting my transition to Sociology and GWS. This shift not only broadened my intellectual horizons but also provided me with invaluable opportunities, both academically and professionally. From the vibrant array of classes I’ve taken to the profound sense of inspiration and representation I’ve encountered within the discipline, GWS has truly been a catalyst for my personal and academic growth. It has exposed me to the intricate social constructions and performances of gender and sexuality, allowing me to delve deep into lived experiences, understand frustrations, and address underlying societal issues.
2. Has GWS changed your approach to your involvement (on or off campus) during college? If so, how?
Undoubtedly, my engagement within and beyond campus has been significantly shaped by my immersion in GWS. This discipline has instilled in me a commitment to actively cultivate safe and inclusive spaces for marginalized voices. Whether by participating in social justice activism or striving to promote diversity and equity in different areas, GWS has empowered me to be a proactive agent of change. It has fueled my determination to advocate for the rights and representation of underrepresented communities, fostering a sense of responsibility toward fostering inclusivity and equity.
3. How has GWS shaped your future plans?
GWS has played a pivotal role in shaping my aspirations and guiding my future trajectory. With a profound passion for sex education and an understanding of the importance of inclusive and medically accurate information, I am driven to create impactful content in this field. Whether through the creation of children’s books that center queer voices or the development of comprehensive curriculums, my goal is to contribute to the advancement of sex education that is both empowering and inclusive. GWS has equipped me with the critical lens and tools necessary to challenge existing narratives and advocate for a more equitable and informed society, paving the way for me to make meaningful contributions in this area.
