Remi Yang is majoring in Computer Science with a certificate in GWS. Remi will graduate in spring 2024.
1.Why did you choose GWS?
At the beginning of my college journey, I encountered numerous challenges stemming from gender inequality in both my career path and my home country’s culture. This exposure to the gender disparities prevalent in Chinese society inspired me to delve deeper into the realm of feminism. Consequently, I decided to enroll in Gender and Women’s Studies (GWS) classes, which allowed me to explore the subject further. Additionally, majoring in computer science often made me feel isolated due to the male-dominated environment. This further motivated me to seek out a more inclusive academic space where I could explore issues related to gender and equality.
2. Has GWS changed your approach to your involvement (on or off-campus) during college? If so, how?
Delving into GWS opened my eyes to a broader spectrum of underrepresented groups and the significance of supporting and caring for one another. I became an active member of various groups, such as Women in Tech and LGBTQ+ in Tech, where I engaged in discussions and activities aimed at fostering a more inclusive environment. Additionally, I took the initiative to organize tech talks specifically for women and non-binary individuals, creating a platform for mutual understanding and support. My involvement in GWS has deeply influenced my perspective on the world, encouraging me to actively contribute to the promotion of equality and inclusion.
3. How has GWS shaped your future plans?
GWS has had a profound impact on my future aspirations. Currently, I am combining my technical skills with a gender and women’s studies perspective by developing small games that promote future feminism. Furthermore, in my professional life, I actively participate in LGBTQ+ and Women in Tech groups to facilitate the entry of more diverse individuals into the tech industry. Looking ahead, I intend to pursue a master’s degree in GWS after accumulating sufficient resources. This academic pursuit will allow me to further advance my knowledge and contribute to the ongoing fight for gender equality and social justice.
