Biography

Sarah Amplo received a MA in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies in 2024 and BA in 2023 from the University at Albany, SUNY.

Originally from New York City, Sarah is a first year Ph.D. student in the GWS Department with an interest in Asian American Studies. Broadly, her research interests pertain to gender and sexuality, Asian American studies, and popular culture. Her master’s thesis titled ‘Into the New World: Queer Asians, K-pop, and Representation’ explores the ways in which K-pop content becomes a source of representation beyond stereotypical and heteronormative media portrayals of Asians that exist within the Western world.

As a queer Filipina, her work is deeply personal as she hopes to explore the constructions of race, gender, and sexuality in the Filipino American diaspora as well as the liminal space that Filipino identity is situated in. Throughout this program, her intention is to develop herself as a scholar-activist within a lineage of strong Filipino American scholarly voices.
