Biography

Joniel R. Pacheco-Muñoz received a double major in Psychology and Puerto Rican Studies, and a minor in Gender Studies at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras campus. His scholarly interests focus on socio-cultural constructions of blackness in Puerto Rico, Decolonial Feminisms, Political Movements, among others.

He collaborated with the Academic Diversification Project in Afrodescendant and Racialization Studies in the creation of the first undergraduate department of Black and Racialization Studies in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. He was a MMUF scholar, where he studied the relationship between perceived social support, access to health services, and skin tone.

Joniel is co-founder of Unión Negra Antirracista (UNA UPRRP), the first black student organization at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. He is also co-founder of Ciencia Pa’ Todes, a collective of scientists who problematize the natural and social sciences in order to promote inclusive, community-based scientific environments and accessible education.
