Biography
Edwin Elizabeth Thomas is a PhD student in the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where their research sits at the intersection of feminist demography, postcolonial theory, reproductive agency and global family planning in India. Their qualifying paper traces the genealogy of population control in British India, combining archival discourse analysis with rigorous quantitative methods including life table construction and demographic decomposition.
Before coming to Madison, Edwin held research and academic communications roles at the Center on Gender Equity and Health (UC San Diego), the Newcomb Institute (Tulane University), and the Population Foundation of India. They are committed to bridging critical theoretical traditions with empirical rigor across both humanistic and quantitative frameworks.
He is advised by Prof Leigh Senderowicz. He is a trainee with the Center for Demography and Ecology (CDE), and affiliated with the UW Collaborative for Reproductive Equity (CORE) as well as the UW Ethics of Care Initiative.
