Claire Hoppe is majoring in History (Honors in the Liberal Arts) and getting a certificates in LGBTQ+ Studies and Integrated Liberal Studies.
- Why did you choose LGBTQ+ Studies?
I chose to do the LGBTQ+ Studies certificate because I wanted an avenue to learn more about myself and the community that I hold so dear. Alongside this, I have always had a deep interest in LGBTQ+ history, and I hoped that by pairing this program with my History major, I would be able to explore those interests! - Has LGBTQ+ Studies changed your approach to your involvement (on or off campus) during college? If so, how?
Doing this program has shown me the importance of active involvement in your community, and I have put that into action by joining the executive board of The Pride Society. Joining the board has given me the opportunity to craft social events where people can take a break from the stresses of college. LGBTQ+ Studies has taught me the importance of people coming together, and I am deeply grateful that the lessons of this program have driven me to become involved in fostering community. - How has LGBTQ+ Studies shaped your future plans?
With this certificate, I feel confident that wherever my career leads me, I will have the knowledge to ensure that the spaces I create and work in are welcoming for all queer and trans folks. My hope is that whether I end up in libraries, museums, or archives, I will have the skill to center queer and trans voices in the history I strive to impart.
