GWS Student Spotlight – Sofia Thao

Sofia Thao is majoring in Gender & Women’s Studies.

  1. Why did you choose GWS?

My first class in GWS was initially an effort to supplement my political and international studies double major. My interest, however, grew immensely during that spring course! The incredible academic rigor and critical thinking involved set GWS apart from my other courses, encouraging me to explore more and truly dive into the field! I was particularly impressed by the expansive thinking that sought to challenge assumptions and deepen our understanding of the social world.
  2. Has GWS changed your approach to your involvement (on or off campus) during college? If so, how?

Certainly! GWS has especially helped me see the way that vulnerability fosters relationships and conversations. I think about this in the ways I work to highlight discourse on mortality through my radio show and in the ways, I work to foster and support my local queer community. While we certainly live in precarious times, GWS has consistently illustrated the power of connection and courage.

  3. How has GWS shaped your future plans?
GWS helped narrow down the sort of work I aspire to do in law! While I was initially most interested in legal work on the national level, GWS has illustrated the critical importance and impact of local work. Since then, I’ve refocused my studies and career on integrated community development on a legal level!
