GWS and Political Science Professor Marwa Shalaby (with Ellen Lust and Lena Wängnerud) has been awarded a grant of approximately $50,400 USD from the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ) Foundation to study gender politics in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) has seen momentous upheavals since 2011, and this has greatly affected gender politics. Professor Shalaby’s project will explore “the ways in which the old paradigms, realities, and contexts for studying gender and politics in the region have been shaped and reshaped by unfolding political transformations since the onset of the uprisings.”
Part of the project includes a workshop to “examine gender and politics across regimes and cultural contexts of the MENA, in comparison with other regions.” Bringing together 43 international, interdisciplinary scholars, the workshop will be a collaborative effort by researchers at the Program on Governance and Local Development (GLD), the Department of Political Science at the University of Gothenburg, and the Working Group on Gender and Politics in the MENA, to discuss cutting-edge research.
Congratulations, Professor Shalaby!
